The problem

Modern awards set minimum pay and conditions, but they're long, complex legal documents. Manual payroll makes underpayment likely even for well-meaning businesses, and workers, especially young ones, struggle to assert their rights until a serious problem arises.

What we did

  • Designed the first version for employers, connecting payroll data to Fair Work Commission award rates to flag underpayment during a pay run.
  • Ran a feasibility study for the government's Business Research and Innovation Initiative, testing whether AI could accurately interpret the General Retail Industry Award.
  • Mapped award classifications for retail and hospitality into plain-language cards people can actually use.
  • Shifted the product to workers: upload a payslip, see how it compares to award rates, and choose a next step.
  • Designed AskSweep, an AI assistant for award questions, plus tools to prepare for a conversation with your employer.
  • [What you personally led or decided]

Key insight

People rarely know they're underpaid until something goes badly wrong. The payslip is the moment to catch it, so that's where the product lives.

Outcome

  • LIVEAvailable now for retail workers on iOS and Android
  • ASKSWEEPAI award advice with conversation history
